EMPOWER

TRAINING CENTER

Upon entering the Training Center program, the daughters are given the opportunity to enroll in one of three vocational skills training tracks: barbering, tailoring, or electrician training.

All of these tracks are designed to meet the needs of people in the community, hence giving the daughters the greatest opportunity to launch and maintain a successful business. These areas also challenge gender stereotypes and will hopefully inspire other women in the community to pursue their dreams.

Social Leadership Development Training

While at the Training Center, daughters can develop their skills in public speaking, professionalism, and societal understanding. These daughters will also be equipped to share information about human trafficking in Nepal along with their own personal stories.

ROSHANI'S STORY

Salon Owner & Cosmetology Instructor

Roshani was abandoned by her parents and left behind with her grandparents. They forced her to quit school and abused her at home. She was so depressed that she planned to run away and find work in India.

Arriving at the border, our partners counseled Roshani on the dangers of human trafficking. They invited her instead to learn vocational skills at the Training Center so that she could become self-sufficient. Roshani agreed and chose the barbering track which was a brand-new program at the time.

In Nepal, there’s a superstition that if a woman cuts a man’s hair, his life expectancy is cut in half. If Roshani chose this path, there would be many obstacles to overcome. Still, there was a huge market for men’s haircuts, so Roshani decided to take on the challenge.

Roshani excelled in her barber training and graduated, ready to hit the ground running. She had dreams of starting her own salon but knew it would be difficult to start. She struggled to bring in any customers for two whole years, but she refused to quit! Slowly, she began to chip away at the gender stereotype and brought in reluctant clients by offering free cuts. They were so pleased with the results that soon, her business was bustling with new customers.

Roshani has since handed her salon over to another daughter and focuses her time now on training her fellow sisters that want to follow in her footsteps. Because of her courage and determination in breaking down barriers in Nepal, many other daughters have a future filled with hope and financial security.

“People used to doubt me and say, “How can a woman do this?” I did not let them pull me down, I had confidence in myself.”
